SUV Head-On CollisionA string of deadly Thanksgiving auto accidents plagued Kanawha County this past weekend, as thousands of motorists took to the roadways for the busiest holiday travel weekend of the year.

According to local reports from the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Department, a 20-year-old Charleston man perished Wednesday night in an accident on Interstate 77 near Sissonville.

At around 8:45 p.m., a semi-truck crossed the median and struck a Toyota Corolla driven by the 20-year-old Charleston man, causing severe damage to the driver’s side of the man’s car.

Deputies who first responded to the accident pronounced the victim dead at the scene. A passenger in the Toyota was taken to Charleston Area Medical Center’s General Division for multiple, severe injuries.

The southbound lanes of I-77 were closed for several hours after the accident and did not reopen until early Thursday morning.

In another weekend car crash, hundreds of residents on Charleston’s west side were without power after a hit-and-run driver slammed into a utility pole near Watts Street before fleeing the scene.

Power companies worked for several hours at the intersection of Watts Street and Crescent Road to restore power to residents and businesses in the area.

In a car accident on Thanksgiving, two people were killed and another was hospitalized after a fiery crash between two sports utility vehicles (SUVs) on Amma Road.

According to the West Virginia State Highway Patrol, the driver of the first SUV lost control and swerved into the path of a second SUV, causing a deadly, head-on collision.

The first SUV burst into flames upon impact, killing the driver and passenger instantly. The driver of the second SUV was transported to a local hospital. The extent of the second driver’s injuries have not been released at this time.
